Social Ministry

The Board of Social Ministry is one the largest and most active groups at Christ Lutheran Church. Meetings are held the first Wednesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. Anyone is cordially invited to attend. "Going For Christ” is their motto. This vital ministry provides support and assistance to the community at large. Their "umbrella" is very large as you will see in the projects listed below.

Current Projects

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY - Each year members of Christ Lutheran Church have the opportunity to volunteer their time and talents to help provide homes for others. Working on a job site will include tasks such as painting and landscaping along with various other jobs. At least once a year, this board provides and serves lunch for an entire job site crew. Fundraisers havebeen done to help support this cause.

PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY - Volunteers beautifully knit and crochet shawls while praying for those who will ultimately receive them. These shawls are then blessed during church services. They are available for those in need of the warmth, both physical and spiritual, they offer as symbols of the encircling love of God and friends in difficult times. Special shawls are given at baptisms and confirmation.

FOOD PANTRY - Non-perishable food items are donated throughout the year by members of Christ Lutheran Church. A large in-gathering of food is held the Sunday before Thanksgiving in order to provide food baskets for Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter to families adopted throught the Good Shepherd Coalition. For those stopping by the church for emergency food assistance other times during the year, a pamplet is provided with info about the Good Shepherd Coalition. Upon their recommendation and screening process, assistance will be provided at the church by scheduling an appointment to pick up needed items.

CLINTONAIRE BINGO - Every other Monday evening from 7:00 - 8:00 p.m., volunteers gather at the Clinton-Aire nursing home to assist residents in playing Bingo. Twenty to thirty residents play for quarter prizes and enjoy the social contact with these willing volunteers.  Without their dedication and the quarter collections at Christ Lutheran, this worthwhile outreach would not be possible.  Many holidays include special gifts or treats for the residents.

TEDDY BEAR MINISTRY - Teddy bears line the windor sills at the rear of the Sanctuary waiting to start their mission. They each wear a tag that reads, Dear Friend, this bear seated with the congregation, heard the Word, said prayers, sang songs of praise and listened to the sermon. Now it comes to share with you, God's love and blessings from your friends at Christ Lutheran Church. These blessed bears are available to anyone that needs some comfort and good cheer.  Another"bear-y" good way to reach out to others in need.

VISITS WITH HOMEBOUND MEMBERS - Throughout the year, especially around the holidays, homebound members receive baked goods and other "thinking of you" items along with a visit from members of this board.  Some kind words and a friendly face can really make someone's day a little brighter.

CREATIVE LIFESTYLES, INC. - This organization provides a group home to mentally challenged adults in Harrison Township, Michigan. Each year at Easter, tote bags containing Easter treats, art supplies, stationary items, grooming items and more are collected and delivered to these residents. These various items are listed on tags and purchased by generous members at Christ Lutheran Church.

CROP Walk - This annual fall 5K walk to stamp out hunger is supported wholeheartedly by members of Christ Lutheran Church. Individuals can sign up to walk or make a donation to support those who do walk. We coordinate with area churches to encourage community fellowship for a good cause. CROP Walk provides funding to local and international hunger programs.

COOKIE WALK - A week or so before Christmas, volunteer bakers provide hundreds and hundreds of homemade cookies from their favorite recipes and donate them for this annual fundraiser to support Social Ministry projects.  In addition to cookies, there are jams, jellies, pickles and a variety of novelty edibles to choose from.  This event has become a holiday must and attendance grows larger every year.  Shoppers come early as this poplular event sells out quickly.  Take a look!

The 2017 Cookie Walk is Saturday, December 16th from 9:00 am until sold out!

ADOPT-A-FAMILY - The Good Shepherd Coalition provides families to be adopted by Christ Lutheran Church for Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. For each holiday, these families receive boxes of groceries, paper necessities and laundry products. This provides far beyond a basket of food for a holiday meal. The quantities provided should last for a few weeks or longer. At Christmas, we also provide gift items for our families. Gift tags are available for our members to take from the Giving Tree (s) and purchase the suggested item listed. The families we are helping might have gonewithout if it hadn't been for the heartwarming generosity shown by our members. These families are so grateful to this caring congregation.

EMERGENCY ASSISTANCE - Through the Good Shepherd Coalition, Social Ministry may be asked to help provide assistance with a utility bill, rent payment or other financial aid in an emergency situation.
