Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America

Mission Statement

As a community of women, created in the image of God, called to discipleship in Jesus Christ and empowered by the Holy Spirit, we commit ourselves to grow in faith, affirm our gifts, support one another in our callings, engage in ministry and action, and promote healing and wholeness in the church, the society, and the world.

The women of Christ Lutheran Church have been active since the early years in our congregation. In the 1960's there were four circle groups: Deborah, Dorcas, Martha, and Naomi, who met for regular Bible study and fellowship. The women also participated in altar care and in taking turns with nursery duty. New member teas were also hosted by the circle groups. One of the"fun" get-togethers in the 1960’s was a "Come as You Are" breakfast. There were a lot of good "sports" among the women who were surprised. We now have Deborah Circle that meets on the third Tuesday of each month, September thru May, from 11:30 am until 2:00 pm. The ladies bring a bag lunch, hold a short business meeting and have a Bible study from our Lutheran Woman Today magazine. A new group sponsored by WELCA is called "Saturday Sisters”. This group of women meets the second and fourth Saturday of each month at 10:00 am with an informal agenda of Bible studies
and good fellowship. Whether participating in a regular group or not, all women of the congregation are considered to be members of WELCA.

Advent Tea

On the first Sunday in December the fellowship hall is transformed with lovely, festive, candle-lit tables. The women of the congregation and their friends gather eagerly for an evening of Bible readings, reflections and carol singing. This is an inspirational evening of peace, a time to pause and consider the meaning of the season of Advent and of Christmas. Following the program, tea and cookies are served. The men and youth of the congregation take over the kitchen for this occasion, a gift to the women.

Easter Breakfast

Each Easter Sunday, a breakfast of quiches is prepared by the women of the congregation. Other members contribute coffee cakes, rolls, fruit and colored eggs for a festive, tasty breakfast enjoyed by many members of the congregations.

Funeral Luncheons

Many members respond when the call goes out for help with a funeral luncheon. This service, organized by the women of Christ Lutheran, is much appreciated by bereaved family members at a difficult time.

To those of you contemplating service to the Lord, but feeling perhaps that you have nothing to offer, we offer this poem written by Elaine Jones in 1966, then the ALCW (American Lutheran Church Women) president.

Lord, give me the
strength I seek in prayer,

Instill in my heart a

To serve you best as
you may choose

My soul and my mind

I come to you, and
through your grace

Shall strive to do my

Though the path is
steep, you will give me hope

This I seek on my
knees in prayer.

I will use these
gifts you have given me

Your blessings I will

Grant me the wisdom
to serve this need

In doing, we receive
greater measure.

Deborah Circle and
Saturday Sisters

are ALWAYS welcoming
new women to the group!
